How can the app reduce the number of transfers?

By looking at each person's net balance. If Marie owes Lucas 50 € and Lucas owes Paul 50 €, the app suggests directly: Marie → Paul, and Lucas is out of the equation. Three members, one transfer instead of two.

Is this really the minimum number of transfers?

Yes for groups up to fifteen people: the algorithm computes the exact optimal solution. For larger groups, it uses a fast method that gets very close.

Can I ignore the suggestion and settle my own way?

Yes, of course. Simplification is a suggestion, not an obligation. Each member can manually log a settlement to whoever they want, and the balance updates accordingly.

What if I'd rather settle a specific expense than a global balance?

You can — log a transfer "to" the person you want with the exact amount. The app takes that settlement into account in the net balance calculation.

Does it work if expenses are in several currencies?

Yes. Once expenses are converted into the count's reference currency (Count+ feature), the algorithm simplifies balances expressed in that common currency.

How it works

The idea is simple: instead of everyone paying everyone, we group balances to cut out round-trips. The result is mathematically optimal for small groups, and very close to optimal on big ones.

Each member has a net balance

Once expenses are logged, each person has a balance: positive if the group owes them, negative if they owe the group. The sum of balances is always zero.

02Step 2

The algorithm looks at every balance at once

Instead of settling each expense one by one (which multiplies transfers), it directly matches debtors with creditors, in the order that minimises transactions.

03Step 3

It suggests the shortest combination

For groups up to fifteen, the computation is exact and provably optimal. Beyond that, a fast heuristic gives a very close result in a few milliseconds.

04Step 4

You validate, you send, you're done

The app lists each transfer to make with the recipient's name and payment methods (IBAN, Wero, Lydia...). You settle in two minutes, balances go back to zero.
