How we work out who owes what
The idea is simple: add up what everyone paid, split the total equally, then compare. The gap between what you fronted and your share is your balance. Finally, we find the shortest set of transfers that squares everyone up.
1. Everyone's share
Add up every expense, then divide by the number of people. Each person owes their share, down to the cent (the remainder is spread so it adds up exactly).
2. Everyone's balance
Balance = what you paid − your share. A positive balance means the group owes you. A negative balance means you owe the group.
3. The fewest transfers
Instead of everyone paying everyone, we compute the smallest number of transfers that settles the whole group. Ten paybacks often become two or three.
An example
Alex, Jordan and Sam go away for the weekend. Alex pays $60 for groceries, Jordan $45 for gas, Sam $90 for dinner. Total: $195, or $65 each. Alex fronted $60 (balance −$5), Jordan $45 (balance −$20), Sam $90 (balance +$25). Result: Alex owes $5 to Sam and Jordan owes $20 to Sam. Two transfers, all settled.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate who owes what?
Add up all the expenses and divide by the number of people to get each person's share. For everyone, compute: what they paid minus their share. That's their balance. People with a negative balance pay back people with a positive balance. The calculator above does this automatically and finds the fewest transfers.
How do you split a bill fairly between several people?
Note who paid what, then split each expense equally between everyone. It doesn't matter whose card was used — in the end, each person owes their share of the total. That's exactly what this tool computes.
How do you reduce the number of paybacks in a group?
Instead of everyone paying everyone, debts are consolidated: someone who owes two others can often settle in one or two transfers. The calculator applies this simplification automatically — the same one used in the CountClub app.
Is the calculator really free?
Yes, completely free and no sign-up. There's nothing to download to use it: everything happens in your browser.
Is my data stored anywhere?
No. The names and amounts you type stay in your browser for the calculation. Nothing is sent to a server, nothing is kept.
How do you track a group's expenses over time?
For a group that lasts (a trip, a flatshare, regular outings), a dedicated app is handier: it keeps the history, handles multiple currencies, receipts and reminders. CountClub does all of that for free, on iOS and Android.
